The first rule of Fighter Club....
2005-09-06 - 10:24 a.m.

Now that my headache is down to a dull roar I think I can bang out another stunning entry…

;-)

So this weekend I was Captain Domestic. I trimmed trees, I cut the grass, I crawled around in insulation…

Go me! Go Kimmie too! The new and improved bathroom is kicking.

On Saturday I headed over to Laz and Sarah’s to help put in the wheelchair ramp. With Bell’s guidance we got it done in two hours. After that the gang there was going to grill dogs and such but since Kim was at home painting and such and since I had errands to run I begged off.

I got my errand to Dick’s completed and even picked up some tasty beverages from Total Beer and Wine.

After I got home and surveyed all of Kimmie’s good works I attacked the Holly Tree in the backyard, trimming back it’s evil, prickly branches so I can have practice in the backyard and can get the van back to the shed without scrapping the top of it.

I also cut the grass/weeds back there which was something that was really needed. After that I think I fell asleep in a hammock.

Later that night Fred and Heather invited us over and we did a lovely outdoor dinner with them and played some Croquet and drank some good wine and beer.

Sunday morning I crawled around in insulation before I got Fred to come over and help me install a new exhaust fan in the newly re-painted and caulked bathroom. I moved a lot of laundry around and installed a pell to boot. (That only took a year…)

That night Jeff and Shelley came over to watch Rome, and then Kim and I watched Shaolin Soccer, which I wasn’t impressed with.

Yesterday I slept in (knowing it would be my last holiday to do that for a while) and then attacked the Shop/Basement/Cave. With Malcolm’s help I got it a pretty good handle on it so I can finish up the cleaning by the end of the week in time for the Household Party and have the workbench clear and the tools sorta stacked up so I can start organizing it.

My next purchases need to be a drill press, a vice, and a miter saw. Then I can get my woodworking/armour repair shop up and running…

Last night Kim and I enjoyed a few beverages and watched a lot of Reno 911. Kim also did a lot of laundry/cleaning and played a lot of her Roller Coaster game. Another major purchase of the horizon is a new computer. The one that Travis gave us is sorta on it’s last legs and we would really like something with more bells and whistles on it so we can play more games, gets a CD Burner, so I can start fooling around with recording CD’s, etc. etc.

One major development in our lives is that because of the rising gas prices Kim and I have decided to Carpool to work. What this means is that I have to get up an hour earlier and that Adult Swim is right out for me in the future. This will save us around $40-80 a week depending on how much we need to get gas, plus tolls, etc. For right now, Kim will keep her space at the parking deck just in case this doesn’t work out, but if it does that would be another $40 a month saved…

Anyway, it’s no secret that money has been tight with us for a long time, most if not all of this year in fact, and with the wedding and all the travel we did earlier in the year that makes sense.

Btw, Happy Birthday Anne! Hope it was a good one. We were sorry to miss Coronation, but saving the money was more important right now. Also, the time invested in the house is money back in our pockets in the long term, so it makes sense to do that.

I’m going to be focusing a lot on local practices/events over the coming year and not traveling abroad quiet so much. I have some goals I want to accomplish and fighter practice tonight is the start of a couple.

I’m really out of shape and expect to earn the asswhomping I deserve at practice. I don’t mind, because tough night like that are how you get better. But I have an idea for a roving “Fighter Club” that I think will help me and some others get out to more practices and encourage each other. Basically the idea involves a buddy system and carpooling. Accountability and espre will help motivate those involved, and it will be good for the several small group practices that I am going to add to the rotation. The basic plan is to have a group created (not just my household) of fighters that will have a rotating schedule of secondary practices. Caer Mear Tuesday night is always going to be my mainstay and one of my goals is to give that practice a shot in the arm with attendance soon. But I (and most fighters) need a secondary practice a week to get better. Having a private practice at my place puts too much strain on Kim and I, and limits participation. What I envision for Fighter Club is posting a schedule that says “This the is rotation for Fighter Club this month. On the second Thursday of a month we will be attending X practice this month, on the third Y practice and on the fourth week we will be attending Z Sunday practice.” Car pool information will be posted and rides arranged so that folks can share the cost burden as well.

Anyway, tonight is practice and then this weekend is another practice so I won’t get the Club set up on a rotation (puff puff give!) for at least another week. It will be an interesting experiment nonetheless…
