Parade Rest
2005-09-07 - 9:28 a.m.First practice back in armour since Pennsic. Last week I was there and marshalling and we had about seven fighters (Hamish, Domenico, Sir Balynar, Baron Vlad, Aethelwulf, Wulfgang/Moe, newer lady fighter who’s name I can’t remember…Vivian maybe?) Last night was Me, Melisent, Wulf/Moe, Domenico, Malcolm, Big Joe. Melisent fought really well and I wasn’t as rusty as I expected. Worked on a couple of ‘new’ things and how to integrate them into my patterns. Some stuff worked, some worked but was painful yada yada. Overall it was a good practice. Frustrating for some of the guys, but that is how you get better, so that was encouraging. What was good was to see folks out there that could have stated at home but made the effort to come out and work on stuff. We had a nice dinner with Moe at Red Robin. (though they shut down the kitchen on us as soon as they could, making their ‘bottomless’ fries a lie. That’s ok, I don’t need the extra fries anyway!) Heh. Also, I’ve never had a waitress describe something on the menu as ‘fucking nasty tonight’ before. She was sorta special. Wow.
Tonight, assuming I don’t fall asleep here at the desk, and bash my head in, I’m going to try and get back to cleaning and putting away laundry. Man I have too many clothes. I need to get some together and send them to Broinfinn down in Glenn Abhann.
Last night as we were walking out of Red Robin something caught the corner of my eye on ESPN2…it was Drum Corp International. Oh man oh man, have I missed that. I went home and watched the last couple of bands. Kim and I had been talking about it before the War (since the World Finals are always right around Pennsic). There is a magic to DCI that takes me back to long afternoons and cold morning practicing with the band…the pop and precision of the corps, the wailing brass, the amazingly intricate drumlines. Wow. It’s another door in my life that I shut long ago but it was so cool to be able to watch it again. I never marched with a Corp (no opportunity and they don’t use woodwinds anyway) but I was a fan back in high school. I went to my first (and only) World Championships in Buffalo, NY weekend before I went my first Pennsic 15 years ago. It’s been that long since I marched, and of course I never marched like those guys do, but damn I miss it. Yes, I was a DCI groupy...
Long time gone.
Funny bit of Atlantian Trivia….me, and Duke Badoiun were marching band geeks. (Only real physical activity I had before the SCA beside goofing around with basketball and years of little league stuff.) Corby and Robear actually played/marched with a Corp. Small world. Let Corby tell you about how his fighting background is Judo if he wants…then imagine him in a kilt, and one of those giant Blackwatch hats twirling a baton as a Drum Major for the Kelties(?) was it? Even better, imagine him with glitter face paint and some of the dance routines the flags do now. Heh. That will scar your retinas man…
