Gone to Texas
2005-11-03 - 3:20 p.m.

Last night after work we went to St. Augustine’s and prayed at the Marian Shire for a while. It was tough, but today I think it helped a bit.

Then we decided to have dinner out, which you think would be a simple thing. But the “we live 8 miles from everywhere” rule seemed to hold sway. I really wanted to go somewhere where we could have cocktails. After some hemming and hawing we decided on a Chili’s that is right by our Gym. But when we got there, it was GONE. Closed down, kaput!

So, we headed down Midlothian a bit more and thought we would try Tripps. Once we got in and got seated we took a look at the menu and realized that we would be spending more than going to Lonestar or Outback. So, in a capricious fit that shocked Kim a little I think, I suggested that we just get up and bail. Which we did.

So we start wandering down the road, and decide to try Friday’s, which means backtracking back to right across the street from Tripps. Once again, we got in, got seated, and realized that there was nothing that appealed to us.

What we really wanted was steak, so we drove back across the street to Lonestar, where we would normally go away, except that I wanted a martini…

WT always jokes that we only go to that one Lonestar, and after last night, I can’t really deny it anymore…

So instead, we just had an awesome steak dinner, and stopped by the ABC store on the way home. Problem solved!

Tonight the girls drive us out to my parents to spend the night at my folk’s house so we can be at the airport at 5am to secure our seats. Then we leave RIR at 6:15AM. We have a change over in Atlanta and then we should be in Dallas by the afternoon.

Friday will be Fred catching up with his family, some sight seeing, and him taking pics of his grandmother’s artwork. Hopefully we will have a nice Texas dinner in there somewhere.

On Saturday is Wizard World Texas, and it will be, to say the least, a interesting exposure for me. I hope to score the last 10 months of comics that I had to stop collecting to help pay for the wedding at a fraction of the original cost. Also, we will do signing, and Fred will do a lot of wheeling and dealing I’m sure. I also hope to hook up with Tommy Castillo, an artist who is also in the SCA.

That night, after we get packed up and showered and fed (Fred seems to think that after 8 hours around geeks we will need showers….I have no need to doubt him!) we will hit the road for Texarkana to get about 3 hours off the overall trip and we will stay in a hotel there on the border.

Sunday will be the big push day of driving about 10-12 hours and we hope to get to Knoxville before we crash in a hotel for the evening.

Monday will be the last leg of the trip home and hopefully, assuming all goes well, we should get back in Richmond in the afternoon.

Compared to the crazy assed straight drive to New Orleans, this will seem like a luxury.

The big thing is that I get a new experience, I get to see a part of the country that I haven’t seen, and I get a change of scenery.

Will Fred end up in a Landfill before we get back?

50-50 Chance.

Good luck to all the entrants in Crown, we will be calling in Saturday night to find out who won.

Wish me safe travels and I should be home in a couple of days!!!
