You know, there are still benefits of paper money.

Since it is raining here in Richmond, I decided to bop out in the car for a minute and check a comics store, that is literally in walking distance of the office, that I have somehow always missed.

Velocity Comics is clean and the titles are easy to find, even if the building itself is a little dingy and ‘fan-like’. While it had did have some alternative comics it was much more mainstream than most places in the VCU area tend to be. The owner says that they have been in business since 03 and somehow I have just missed them. (We don’t do a lot of advertising, he says to me, we prefer to spread by the ‘Virus’ method. Uh-huh. Great. I’ll add you to the list of defunct comics stores in a couple of years there bud…as soon as your trust fund runs out. :- )

Anyway, it’s a cool little store and I see me going by there from time to time in the future. It’s the sort of place I would like to open one day if I ever hit the lottery.

Afterwards I walked across the street to a Mediterranean place called “Sahara” that offered carry-out and dine in. I was the only dine in customer, and once I got the menu that said “10% dine in fee” on every page I realized why. What I didn’t see anywhere and should have asked about, was a Visa sign. So anyway I eat this amazing gyro combo with the best tabuli I’ve had in ages, and then I realize that the owner doesn’t except credit cards. I have, of course, as is usual, about $1 on me. He is a nice enough guy to suggest the closest ATM’s and not get bent out of shape about the cash. So I leave my comic book (couldn’t go in and not buy something…) and putter over to the Ukrop’s, thinking that they will have an ATM and certainly will have parking. While I did find a place to park, I was out of luck on the ATM. Luckily, I remembered that I had some cash squirreled away in the car and doubled back to pay.

So.

That was an adventure.

I have to say that as good as the food is, I can’t see that place surviving long term in the VCU area. Those kids are worse about cash than I am, and the 10% charge has clearly driven dine-in customers away. Oh well, the tabuli was outstanding. I just think their business practices leave a little to be desired.
