Jr.
2006-02-16 - 12:35 p.m.Kim is doing well, thanks for asking.
My maternal uncle Willard died yesterday after a long battle with Lung Cancer. I will miss his huge hands, his deep booming voice and his loud sense of humour.
My mom is really devastated so we are going to go down to Johnston County for the funeral, assuming that they have it this weekend. Right now, we are waiting for a phone call. Mom has been down there for a while since they knew the end was close.
For years my uncle was called "Junior" (Willard was my grandfather's name, and he was named "Willard Jr." even though he wasn't the first son....yes, my family is weird...but with 11 kids you plenty of opportunities to be creative with names.) and on his 50th birthday asked the family to call him "Willard". My mom was a little indignant about it, and it did seem a little late to be changing names to me at the time. But still. It was his name, so it was his choice.
Willard would come to town briefly, buy me a lottery ticket (a novelty for him when VA had a lottery and NC didn't), take us all out for dinner (he was a salesman in Raleigh for years and did pretty well for himself), and drink and smoke.
His voice was huge and I was very intimidated by him as a child. Like all the Southerland Men, he was Huge. Over 6', broad shouldered, blonde, handsome....your typical NC farm boy.
He and his wife gave us a very generous wedding gift, though he was too sick to attend.
Anyway, just waiting for details.
In other news, I have a cold, and I seem to be starving to death. I can't eat enough. I had a steak from Lonestar last night, and 30 minutes later I was starving again. Weird.
Salad bar here I come!!!
The tree folks are supposed to come by and remove that dead pine tree today, * Crosses fingers *... and to help pay for it Kim and I were skipping Ice Castles, but family is important, so we will be hitting the road I guess.
Anyway, 15 minutes till I can gorge. Later!
